COMPASSION IN SGVAs anti-Asian violence rose during the pandemic and hit closer to home, I wanted to do more than feel helpless. In March 2021, I co-founded Compassion in SGV to help create a safer, more supported community for our elders in the San Gabriel Valley.

Alongside organizing our efforts, I led the creative direction while working with volunteers who, like me, were looking for a way to turn that feeling of helplessness into action. Everyone brought something different to the table—from design and copywriting to marketing, merchandising, and more—and I found ways to play to those strengths as we built Compassion in SGV together.
What started as an idea to help our community grew into a network of 200+ volunteers, with initiatives ranging from our free chaperone program and food drives to rallies, AAPI Heritage Month block parties, free self-defense workshops, and community vigils.

We created multilingual materials to spread the word about our free chaperone program, connecting community members with volunteers so they didn’t have to navigate everyday activities alone. Whether it was a daily walk, grocery run, or doctor’s appointment, the idea was simple: there’s safety in numbers.
Block the Hate Rally
Hosted during AAPI Heritage Month, Block the Hate brought our community together to celebrate AAPI culture while creating a space for connection and empowerment. The event featured guest speakers, music, food, local vendors and community organizations, and a community raffle, with support from brands like PlayStation and Target alongside local small businesses and artists — all coming together in support of our mission.

A Vigil for Monterey Park
Following the tragic shooting in Monterey Park, Compassion in SGV came together to organize a community vigil honoring the lives lost. Through song, speeches, a prayer in Cantonese, and a Buddhist blessing, we created a space for our community to grieve, remember, and stand together.
